Gilbert is correct.Bess Twaddle notes that he was named for Evan Shelby, a member of the prominent Tennessee family for which Shelby County
was named.The probate of his will notes that he died "about June 3, 1883." Named in his will were his wife Jane and sons John Wesley Gilbert and
Spencer Bankston Gilbert. Witnesses to the will were T. Jeff Reynolds and J. W. Gilbert. His probate was administered by Mrs. Jane Gilbert and T.J.
Reynolds.
