Thomas J. Reynolds (1796 GA - 1869 MS)
To date, I have found no significant errors in the Henry Johnson Reynolds May 5 1904 journal and in it he only
refers to his father as Thomas J., not Thomas Jefferson. So far, I have found no evidence that TJR's middle
name was Jefferson. I think it's possible the J. stood for James because his maternal grandfather's name
was Thomas James Kennerly and the name of TJR's father may have been James Reynolds. In addition, TJR's
maternal grandmother's maiden name was Elizabeth Winston James.
In the journal, Henry Johnson Reynolds states, I (HJR) learned from my father (TJR) that he (TJR) had
a good recollection of his (TJR) grandfather (John), as my father (TJR) was born in the year 1796 and
his grandfather (John) made his home with his father (James) in his (John) declining years. Note:
I've added the names in parenthesis for clarification. To me, this indicates that TJR remembers
living with his grandfather when TJR was a boy. This is a good indication that his grandfather probably
moved with the family from GA to KY to TN and then to AL. The Reynolds family was probably in Madison
Co, AL in 1809 when TJR was about 15 years old and his grandfather (John) was about 60-70 years old.
TJR's father (James) would be about 33-35 years old.
Gale Fuller indicated she found a John Reynolds and Thomas Kennerly living next to each other in the
late 1700's in Wilkes Co, GA but they moved a few years later to TN. This correlates with HJR's journal
because TJR said that because his family moved when he was around 5 years old, he never knew who his
grandfather's brothers and sisters were, although TJR spoke often about one of his father's cousins,
Harmon Runnels, who had a son that became governor of MS, Hiram G. Runnels and and one another son that
became governor of TX, Hardin R. Runnels (actually, Hardin was Harmon's grandson).
Apparently, TJR's father moved his family, along with the Kennerly's, first to Kentucky and then to
Desherd, TN because TJR's brother George Kennerly was born in Kentucky and Thomas Kennerly's military
pension papers indicated he moved to Kentucky for a short period of time. The source for Kennerly's pension
papers comes from Gale Fuller 12/4/98 email to me.
John Reynolds (ca 1750 England - ca 1825 AL)
A John Reynolds was found living next door to Thomas Kennerly in Wilkes Co, GA (later to become Oglethorpe
Co.) in the late 1700's. Because Thomas' daughter Elizabeth married a Reynolds, it could be assumed that
the Reynolds who owned the property next door could have been TJR's father. However, I think John Reynolds
was TJR's grandfather becuause the HJR journal indicates TJR's grandfather moved to GA at the close of the
Rev War (about 1784) when TJR's father would have been around 10 years old. It seems quite possible that
John Reynolds and Thomas Kennerly were Rev War soldiers together (they both lived in VA during the war) and
when it was over, they and their families moved together to GA. Thomas Kennerly stated that he lived in the
Wilkes Co area for 19 years (until approx 1803, the HJR journal indicates about 1801) and then went to KY
for a few years and then finally settled in Desherd, Franklin Co, TN for 19 years (1813 - 1832). It is my
feeling that TJR lived next door to Elizabeth Kennerly from the time he was about 10 years old and married
her when he was 18-20 years old. TJR's father probably didn't own property at that time, so it seems fair
to conclude that Elizbeth's father-in-law (John Reynolds) owned the farm next door. I think that John Reynolds
and Thomas Kennerly again moved their families, together, to Kentucky where they stayed for a few years and
then the Kennerly family moved to Desherd, Franklin Co, TN and the the John Reynolds family moved to Limestone
Co, AL. It's also possible the Reynolds family first moved to Desherd with the Kennerlys and then went to
Limestone Co AL. The Reynolds family shows up in Madison Co, AL in the early 1800's but it is probable that
Limestone Co AL did not exist at that time but was part of Madison Co, AL.
Reynolds Timeline
In order to give context to the Reynolds family genealogy I have tried to include dates of historical events
that ocurred during the genealogy period, hoping that those events might give clues as to why the Reynolds
migration ocurred as it did.

Daniel Boone born in Berks Co, PA
1747
The Ohio Company was chartered in 1747 by groups in London and Virginia with the mission to subdivide and sell
a half-million arcres in the upper Ohio River valley area, based on a grant acquired form King George II
of England. See: Early U.S. History
1748
In order to allow for western expansion of the English colonies, Britain entered into a the Treaty of Logston
with the leaders of the Delaware, Shawnee, Iroquois and Wyandot (Huron). This treaty would allow claims to
the region south of the Ohio River. Logstown was near present day Pittsburgh. The treaty led to serious conflict
with ther French because they were concerned about losing the Ohio River for tranportation of their fur trade
with the interior indians. See: Atlas of Westward Expansion p5
1748 Jul
A conference took place at Logstown, near present day Pittsburgh, between British colonial officials and the
huge Indian population in the area. Some of the Ohio tribes had grown dissatisfied with the quality of French
trade goods and resented the restrictions the French had palced on their trade with the English, who were
beginning to offer better goods at a a more generous rate of exhcange. A treaty resulted that allowed the
Virginia colony to assert its claims to the region south of the Ohio River. This was a prelude to the British
Colonies' first territorial expansion west of the Appalachians.

The British 1748 Logtown treaty with the local Indian population led to the French attacking an English trading
post on the Miami River in the Ohio territory. The French were especially concerned that the strategic Forks
of the Ohio would fall under British control, cuttinf off France's eastern access to the Ohio/Mississipi
River system, so vital to their fur trade.
1753 Apr
After the French built a series of forts in the Ohio territory, the British sent 21 year old,
Major George Washington to remind the French miliary that the Ohio territory belonged to the Virginia
colony. The French dismissed his claims.
1753
In order to protect the Ohio River for their fur trade industry, France built several forts in British territory
near Pennsylvania so British Major George Washington was sent to demand the French leave British Territory.
Washton returned to report the French refusal. See: Atlas of Westward Expansion p5
1754
Benjamin B. Hubert moved his family to from Frederick Co. VA to Caswell Co, NC where his daughter, Fanny Hubert
was born. She later married Dudley Runnels. Note that Frederick
Co. VA is near Augusta Co where our ancestor, John Reynolds, probably moved
from when he moved his family to Georgia in about 1784. Frederic
Co, VA is also where our ancestor, James Trussell originally came from. Re: Ann Burch

The Land Act of 1777 created the "head-right" system that allowed the head of the family to select
up to 200 acres of unoccupied land for himself and 50 acres for each family member and slave. Second, those
who were loyal during the Revolutionary War or served in the military were given "bounty" land as
a method of land disbursement. By 1808, property was also being distributed through land lotteries. Many
people were unable to take adantage of this act until after the Rev War in 1784.
1777
Wilkes County was created in 1777 as one of the original 11 counties of Georgia. The original
Wilkes (in some old records Wilks) County included all of the area now in Lincoln, Elbert, and Wilkes
Counties; most of Oglethorpe,, Madison, Taliaferro and Warren Counties; half of Hart County, and parts
of Clarke, Glascock, Greene Hancock , and McDuffie Counties, and of course present day Wilkes County.
1779
Harmon Reynolds married Hester Hubert.
1783
With U.S. independence, the nation's western territorial boundary was designated as the Mississippi River,
with Spanish Louisiana bordering its western frontier, Spanish control of the lower Mississippi, and especially
of New Orleans, became a problem for western settlers when the Spanish would often close that port to American
shipping.
There were then few roads connecting the Trans-Appalachian West with the East. Consequently, the southern
Ohio Valley regions of Kentucky and western Tennesse, and the Ameican settlements of the lower Mississippi
Valley relied on the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans as a trade route to markets in the
eastern U.S., the West Indies and Europe. See: Atlas of Westward Expansion c1995,

In order to accommodate population growth, Oglethorpe County was created from a portion of Wilkes County in
1793. A part of Greene County was added to Oglethorpe County in 1794. Parts of Oglethorpe County were added
